Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2013 - sneak preview

In a few hours we will all be astonished when the winners of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2013 awards ceremony are revealed.

This competition is in its 49th year and it has the best wildlife photographs. If you don't believe me, just ask Google.

It is for serious wildlife photographers. Many of the winners spend weeks or months staking out a particularly rare species or animal behaviour in order to get the perfect shot.

But it's not just for the pros.

There are also categories for children 10 years and younger, 11-14 and 15-17. You can see some of the photos from these categories here. If you have an amazing wildlife photo, think about submitting it to next year's competition. Entries open in December.

We will all get to see the winners tomorrow, but that's hours away. Who can wait that long? Not the Natural History Museum who is offering a sneak peak at the commended images for this year's competition. These are the photos that didn't quite win but are still pretty great. You can see the slideshow here.

If you are a sucker for awards ceremonies you can catch the announcements of the winners as they happen by following @NHM_Live on Twitter.
